Description:
Reflection at Plane Surfaces: Light rays and beams, reversibility of light, luminious flux; Laws of reflection, deviation of light by mirrors, the sextant, images in mirrors. Reflection at curved mirrors: concave, convex and parabalic mirrors, forcal length, radus of curvature, sign convention, mirror formular, graphical
construction, experimental methods.

Refraction at plane and curved surfaces: Laws of refraction, refractive index, real and apparent depth, critical angle and total internal reflection, refraction through poison, minimum deviation, the spectrometer. Refraction through lenses, thin lens, lens formula, sign convention, graphical construction, conjugate points, combination of lenses, power of lens, defects of vision and their correction.
Dispersion: White light spectrum dispersive power, pure spectrum, fraunhofer lines, chromatic aberration and achromatic lens.
Optical Instruments: Astronomical telescope, Reflecting telescopes, poison binoculars, simple and compound microscope.

Velocity of Light: Different methods of determining velocity of light, terrestial and astronomical methods.

Interference: Constructive and destructive interference, optical path, coherent and incoherent sources, double slit and biprison, thin wedge, Newton's rings.

Diffraction of Light: Single slit, resolving power diffraction grating.

Polarisation of Light: Polarised light, reflection Brescoster's angle, double refraction, Nicol poison.

Assessment is by assignments and examination.
